Small moves around Whangarei and Bream Bay

A household splitting up or shrinking is the shift that usually fits one van load rather than a truck. A student flat in Raumanga clears out at the end of the year and one person's bed, desk and boxes go a few streets over to Morningside or up to Kensington. A couple leave a rented unit in Regent for a first house in Kamo or Tikipunga. Someone sells the family place at Onerahi, keeps what will fit in a unit, and moves out near Maunu. Then there are the single item runs, a second hand dresser from Whau Valley that will not go in the boot.

Whangarei is long rather than compact, running from Kamo in the north down to the harbour in the east, with the Hātea River through the middle, so Onerahi to Kamo crosses the whole city. Say if your place is single level with one step up, because that matters to the driver more than the distance. The hill streets in Whau Valley and Sherwood Rise hide short steep drives and low carports a van cannot reverse into. Out at Parua Bay, Whangarei Heads and Ngunguru the road narrows and winds. Ruakākā is a straight run south on SH1, but it is still a trip out and back before the lifting starts.

Bids differ here because each driver is pricing their own day and their own van. One is already running south over the Brynderwyns that week and has room alongside what is loaded. Another works alone out of a van, which costs less to keep on the road than a truck and a crew, so the bid can cover the hours your job actually takes. A run out to the Heads or down to Marsden Point is travel time before anything is lifted, and the driver prices that. List every item, note the steps and the driveway, and drivers bid on the job you actually have instead of guessing at it.
