Furniture jobs here tend to fall into three shapes. One is the piece bought out of town, a couch or a bed ordered in Auckland that now has to be carried north over the Brynderwyns. One is the town run: a flat-pack wardrobe from the stores around Porowini Avenue that will not go in the car, or a bed and drawers shifting from a rental in Kensington to a first home at Kamo. And one is the coast job, a dining table or outdoor setting going out to a bach at Ngunguru, Parua Bay or Whangarei Heads.

Little of this is flat work. Whangarei is built around hills and a harbour, so a house in Whau Valley, Sherwood Rise or up behind Onerahi often sits well above or below the road, with steps at the gate and a garage tucked under the floor. Whangarei Heads Road follows the harbour edge the whole way, and the run out to Ngunguru climbs inland over the hills before it reaches the coast. Neither is quick. Lifestyle blocks at Maungatapere or Hikurangi end in metal driveways, and in town Cameron Street Mall takes no vehicles, so a CBD drop means carrying in from the nearest street a van can stop on.

Bids on a Whangarei furniture job rarely land on the same number, because each driver prices the run against what else is on their week. One may already be booked to Auckland, so a bed frame riding back over the Brynderwyns alongside an existing load costs them less than a dedicated run south. A drop at the Heads or out on the coast gets priced on road time rather than kilometres. A driver based down at Ruakākā may be running back up SH1 at the end of the day anyway. List the steps, the metal drive and whether the wardrobe comes apart, and drivers can price what is actually there.
