The route
Getting from Christchurch to Wellington
It is a long day north on State Highway 1 to the Picton sailing, then the Cook Strait crossing on top. The driving comes first here and the ferry is the last leg, so your load arrives in Wellington off the water. Posting the job costs nothing and no bid has to be taken.
Loads head north out of Christchurch for reasons that start with a person: a job in the public service, a university course, or a partner already up there with a flat to fill. So a bedroom or a studio worth of gear goes on the van, or a single couch, bed frame or dresser worth taking north rather than replacing. Wellington buyers post Canterbury pickups too, when the Trade Me seller is down this end. Then the trade side: building materials, antique and fragile pieces out of older Christchurch homes, and commercial freight leaving the yards around Hornby and Islington.

What you can send
From single items to a full flat
The run heads north on State Highway 1 through Amberley and Cheviot, out onto the Kaikōura coast where the road is pinched between the hills and the sea and a slip can shut it, then inland past Ward and Seddon into Blenheim and on north to Picton. When the coast shuts, the detour is inland over Lewis Pass, which adds hours. Only then does the sailing start, which is why a driver builds the day backwards from the departure they hold: check-in closes well before the boat leaves, and missing it means waiting on the next one.

Timing and protection
Booking it in
What a driver bids on this run turns on where their van was going anyway. One who brought a load down into Canterbury has an empty deck for the trip home and works out what filling it is worth. Another would be making the whole trip for your job alone, and the bid says as much. Ferry space for the vehicle has to be held either way, so dates carry more weight here than on a road-only run. Jobs are scheduled at least 24 hours ahead and up to 90 days out, so offer a range of days and spell out the Wellington end while you are at it.
