The route
Getting from Christchurch to Auckland
Christchurch to Auckland runs most of the length of the country, two islands and a ferry, so it is worth describing the job properly once and letting drivers come back to you. Post it free on SoundMove and ID-verified drivers bid on it. Compare the prices and dates in each bid, read a driver's ratings and reviews where they have them, then choose. There is no obligation to accept anything.
Plenty of loads leave Canterbury heading north. A student finishing up in Ilam sends a bed, a desk and a couch ahead of a first job in Auckland. A family follows work north and moves a flat's worth of gear rather than a whole house. A Christchurch seller posts a dresser or a set of dining chairs to a Trade Me buyer up north. Canterbury businesses freight stock, display gear and equipment north to customers and trade shows. Second-hand and antique pieces travel this way too, and those are worth flagging in the listing so drivers know what they are lifting.

What you can send
From single items to a full flat
In this direction the crossing comes early. State Highway 1 runs north out of Christchurch through Waipara and along the Kaikōura coast to Picton, then the Cook Strait sailing puts the load ashore in Wellington after roughly three and a half hours on the water. The longer half is still ahead: north through the Manawatu, over the Desert Road, across the Waikato, then over the Bombay Hills onto the Southern Motorway. All up it is about 1075 kilometres and 13 to 14 hours, the sailing included. Snow shuts the Desert Road at times and the coast road has slow sections, so ask for a window rather than an hour.

Timing and protection
Booking it in
You post the job once with an item list, rough dimensions, photos and both addresses, and drivers bid on it. Each driver sets their own price, which is why two bids on the same load can look nothing alike. Backloading feeds into that: a driver who has brought freight south and emptied out at a yard in Woolston or Hornby has deck space for the run back north, and prices your load around the Picton sailing they have already booked. Before you accept, drivers can ask a public question on your job listing. You are under no obligation until you accept one, and posting costs you nothing either way.
